Ahmedabad, March 30, 2020: Migrant workers who were shifted to the Rajiv Awas Yojana housing block located behind Rajpath Club on SG Highway have moved out after lashing out against the AMC for shifting them to a place with poor facilities.

Migrant workers most of them casual labourers and daily wagers picked up by the police from Chiloda Circle and Odhav Circle after they were walking out of Ahmedabad were shifted to the Rajiv Awas by the AMC. “Most of these workers were walking hundreds of kms to their native places as they were running out of money following the sudden lockdown announced on March 24,” a well placed source tells this report.

The workers were finally moved out on Saturday because the housing block lacked even basic amenities.

GNN learns from Ahmedabad Police sources that more than 3,000 persons were shifted to Rajiv Awas.

AMC on its part provided food and water to these workers. But the housing block did have either fans or running water. The migrant workers pointed this out both to the AMC and to the police following which they were asked to leave Rajiv Awas.

Several sources in the AMC and the police said as the housing block was not maintained properly it was difficult to make people stay there. “The block should have been provided with some basic facilities like fans and running water,” we hear.

Also the migrant workers were not happy with the quality of the food given to them.
