Ahmedabad, Feb 01, 2020: Gujarat based activists – both social and legal are thinking out of the box to create awareness amongst the people on the hugely controversial Citizens Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).
The activists are now reaching out to individual mohallas (neighbourhoods) in Ahmedabad and some other districts, where Muslims and Dalits have been living side by side for generations. At the forefront of these mohalla meetings, as they are being called is the Alpsankhyak Adhikar Manch (Minorities Rights Platform) and social activists representing different professions. These meetings are headed by a team of seven to eight people, including legal experts, activists and community leaders.
The activists are resorting to such meetings as the Gujarat Government does not want even peaceful protests against the CAA, NRC and NPR. “We have no other way of expressing our dissent,” noted advocate Shamshad Pathan said.
At a time when it is getting harder and harder for private citizens to conduct public meetings, legal and social activists in the state have begun to think laterally to create awareness on the Citizens Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).
